In this drawing, two symbols that represent freedom and migration are combined. Liberty stands on her pedestal with not an enflaming torch but instead an illuminating one that guides incoming migrants seeking a new hope. On her pedestal, engraved in bronze, it says “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!". On the flame, rests a monarch butterfly. Every year, this butterfly migrates to Mexico’s warmer climate from the approaching winter in the U.S. Because of this, the Monarch butterfly has become a symbol of migration among the Latino community who trace our heritage back in Latin America. Let there be hope when we look towards the future, while never forgetting who and what our country was built on.
